What is Value Oriented Mutual Fund

Value equity funds follow the investing principles popularized by legends like Warren Buffet. These funds look for stocks that are currently trading on discount due to some reason but have long term potential.

Advantages of Value Oriented Funds

  • Give you a portfolio of relatively inexpensive stocks of good companies
  • Quest for good deals mean they don't restrict themselves to one part of the market
  • Ideal for 7+ year investment horizon
  • Investing in out-of-favour stocks means they may take time to deliver returns

Since Value Oriented Mutual Funds are equity funds i.e. they invest in stocks of companies, you need to stay invested for at least 5 years.

Value Funds need to invest at least 65% of their money in stocks and have to follow the value investment strategy when deciding where they invest the money. The value investment strategy is not defined as per regulation, and therefore every fund manager has his own framework of what value investing is. However, most of these funds follow the basic tenets of value investing wherein they look for stocks that may be undervalued compared to their intrinsic value.

Value Oriented Mutual Funds invest in equities, so in a short term, they can be volatile. However, over a long-term, the risk comes down substantially.

Value Oriented Funds have on an average delivered 12.3% p.a. returns in the last 5 years. Their 3 and 10 year annualized returns are 22.85% and 13.44% p.a.

Value Funds can be a good option if you are patient with your investments in these funds. Value investing is all about picking stocks that might be out of favor among investors but are fundamentally strong companies. These stocks might take some time before they come back to what their true worth is. This strategy also has an additional benefit. Since these stocks are already discounted, the risk of them going down further is relatively lesser, and this reduces risk. Value investing is an alternate strategy, and you should have funds with different strategies to ensure diversification.
